EXCLUSIVE: Super 30 to release in China after return of normalcy
One of the biggest hit films of 2019 was Super 30 and was a success story in itself. It starred Hrithik Roshan and was based on the life of Patna mathematician Anand Kumar. There was some negativity surrounding the film over Hrithik’s casting. But the film opened very well and enjoyed a tremendous word of mouth. It ended up earning a huge Rs. 146.94 crore at the domestic box office, which turned out to be a pleasant surprise for the trade and industry.
Over the years, China has emerged as a lucrative market where several Bollywood films like Dangal, Secret Superstar, Hichki etc. have done record-breaking business. A film like Super 30, given its theme is ideal for the release in the neighbouring country, considering the tastes of the moviegoers there. There was no update in this regard however. Meanwhile, all releases too were halted in China, just like everywhere else, due to the Coronavirus scare. But it has been limping back to normalcy and there are reports that cinema halls too will be gradually opening up across the country.
Yesterday, at a webinar comprising of some important personalities in the field of production and exhibition, Reliance Entertainment Group CEO Shibasish Sarkar unveiled that Super 30’s China release is on the anvil. Later, he exclusively told Bollywood Hungama, “Super 30 was applied for censorship in China. As and when the country and the industry open up, it will first get censored. And then it’ll get a release in the country.”
A trade source, on this development, says, “The people of China love such human underdog stories with the backdrop of education. Some of our Indian films like 3 Idiots, Hichki, and Hindi Medium etc. worked big time there with the audiences. Super 30, hence, is an ideal film for its audiences. In fact, if things go well, it can be one of the first big hits in the Chinese market post lockdown.”
Interestingly, Hrithik Roshan had travelled to China in June last year to promote his 2017 thriller Kaabil. At that time, Super 30 was a month away from release and he had told the Chinese media, “Super 30 is something that talks about the power and the value of education and teachers. And, I think that is another place where I think there is a similarity between China and India as both these countries give a lot of respect to teachers. The teachers form the top of the societal chain in both these worlds.”
