20 Years of Lagaan EXCLUSIVE: Aamir Khan on producing lesser films compared to his contemporaries – “I don't believe in scale, I believe in doing one thing at a time properly”
Lagaan, which released 20 years ago on June 15, marked the establishment of production house named Aamir Khan Productions. Since then the production house has become the banner of some really intellectual and critically acclaimed films. The production house owned by Aamir Khan follows a different set of ideology from other production houses. AKP has a strong affirmation in 'Quality over Quantity'.
Now, as Lagaan has just completed 20 glorious years, Aamir Khan spoke to the media celebrating the two decades of the film and spoke at a length about Aamir Khan Productions and its ideologies and future plans. He said, "If you notice AKP (Aamir Khan Productions) as a producer, it's been 20 years. Lagaan was the first film. In this span of 20 years, every production house normally brings in at least 3-4 films a year. In these 20 years, for example, Yash Raj Studios has at least released 80 films or Karan Johar will have around 80 films in 20 years because they do 3 or 4 a year, even if they do 2 a year. But, you won't even find 10 films of mine in the last 20 years.”
The actor also added, "We are not a production house which believes in quantity, which actually is a boutique house. In fact, I have tried to explain too many people that by the concept of handloom workers. They handloom a particular thread and will stay till the time it is completely made. If you ask them to make another saree while the previous one is incomplete, they would simply deny it. So, I am like that only. Currently, the handloom is not free as I am making Laal Singh Chaddha. Whenever my handloom will get free, I'll make another one. I am almost like a handloom worker, small cottage industry types. I don't believe in scale, I believe in doing one thing at a time properly. "
When asked what principle he follows while making films and how does his production house functions, Aamir further said, “So, in our production house, we follow that principle, when you love a story make it, don't think of the box office. You love a story, make it. That is our principle in AKP. Peepli Live, I loved the story, I made it. How it will work, how much will it earn that I don't know. Touchwood, we have a 100% record till date. I have not lost money in even the film that Swati Chakravarti directed it for me called Rubaru Roshni which was the documentary film; we even earned some amount of money in it. So, we luckily have a 100% record. It's been a great journey; it's been a great learning experience. This is how we work. We work where we believe in something real meaning that's how APK functions.”
On the work front, Aamir Khan will next star in Laal Singh Chaddha which is a Hindi adaptation of Tom Hanks’ classic, Forrest Gump.
